Patches Game strategy that survives a crowded board
The best move is usually the one with the fewest alternatives. Count first, draw second, and keep an eye on the cells your neighbours will need later.
Start where the board says the most
A corner clue has fewer possible rectangles than the same clue in the centre. An edge cuts away half the directions. A gold square has fewer legal shapes than an ordinary number. Those are good opening moves because the board has already done part of the deduction for you.
Before drawing anything, scan the four corners, then the outer edge. Look for a clue whose possible rectangles all share several cells. Even if you cannot place the whole patch yet, those shared cells tell you where neighbouring clues cannot go. This small pause prevents the common mistake of solving the most visually obvious clue while quietly ruining the corner behind it.
Read numbers as rectangle sizes
Each clue number has a short list of factor pairs. A 12 can make 1 by 12, 2 by 6, or 3 by 4 rectangles. Orientation doubles some of those options. The grid, arrows, and nearby clues then remove the shapes that cannot fit.
Prime numbers are less flexible. A 5 must be a strip five cells long, and a 7 must be seven cells long. That often makes a prime clue near an edge easier than a smaller composite number in open space. Square numbers deserve a separate glance because a gold 9 has exactly one shape, while an ordinary 9 may also form a 1 by 9 strip.
Clue 4
Possible basic sizes: 1 by 4 and 2 by 2. A gold 4 removes the strip.
Clue 6
Possible basic sizes: 1 by 6 and 2 by 3. A direction arrow decides which side must be longer.
Clue 8
Possible basic sizes: 1 by 8 and 2 by 4. On a small board, the long strip often disappears immediately.
Clue 9
Possible basic sizes: 1 by 9 and 3 by 3. A square symbol makes it one of the cleanest deductions available.
Protect cells before they become holes
A legal patch can still be a bad patch. After testing a rectangle, look at the empty cells along its border. Ask which clue can still reach each small pocket. A single isolated cell is harmless only when it contains a 1. A two cell corridor needs a clue that can form a 1 by 2 patch. If no remaining clue can use the space, the candidate rectangle is wrong even though the game would allow you to draw it.
Large clues are especially good at stealing flexible space. Do not place the first large rectangle that fits. Check whether it can slide one cell in either direction, and compare what each position leaves behind. The useful placement often gives a corner or narrow edge to a smaller clue.
You can also work backward from the remaining area. If three unsolved clues total 12 and the open region has 12 cells, those clues must stay inside it. A hidden number becomes easier when every visible number around it has already claimed a sensible amount of fabric.
Plan around the special mechanics
Coffee stains change the order
A stained clue is not merely missing information. It creates a sequencing problem. Find an exposed clue that can touch the stain by an edge, solve that patch, then reconsider the board with the revealed number. Avoid building a large rectangle along the stain unless you know another neighbour can still reach it.
Linked clues are one decision in two places
When two clues share a letter, list the shapes that both locations can support. If clue A has room for 2 by 3 or 1 by 6, but the second A cannot hold a six cell strip, both clues must use 2 by 3. Solve the tighter location first and treat the other as confirmation.
Double layers need an overlap budget
A striped double cell belongs to two patches. Trace which two clues can realistically cross it. Once one patch is placed, the second still needs a valid rectangle with its own clue and area. Covering the striped cell is only half the job.
Fixed fabric is a wall and a clue
A fixed patch removes space, but its outline also limits neighbouring rectangles. Follow its long edges. They often create narrow lanes where a directional or prime number has only one possible orientation.
Adjust the plan for each mode
Espresso Blitz
Blitz rewards quick recognition, not deep analysis of every branch. Start with squares, primes, corners, and obvious strips. If two options remain, move to another clue instead of burning the clock on a guess. The board often resolves the ambiguity for you after one or two certain placements.
Perfectionist
Perfectionist punishes exploratory drawing. Do the experiment in your head: count the area, trace the border, and check the cells left behind. Use Undo when a later deduction disproves a move, but do not treat it as a substitute for reading the whole board.
Campaign
The campaign is the best place to learn patterns. When a solution surprises you, look at the clue that forced it. Later levels reuse the same geometry with more layers, so recognising why a rectangle was inevitable is more useful than memorising where it sat.
